WASHINGTON — President Trump’s longtime adviser Roger J. Stone Jr. pleaded not guilty on Tuesday to felony charges in the special counsel investigation during a brief federal court appearance in which the often flamboyant Mr. Stone appeared solemn and said little.
During the 15-minute proceeding, a lawyer for Mr. Stone, Robert C. Buschel, entered the plea on his client’s behalf to charges of obstruction, witness tampering and making false statements. After the hearing, Mr. Stone declined to comment to a throng of reporters following him through the courthouse and outside.
In a detailed indictment unsealed last week, the special counsel, Robert S. Mueller III, accused Mr. Stone of lying to investigators for the House Intelligence Committee, which is conducting its own inquiry into the Russian election interference campaign, and of pressuring another witness in that investigation to lie to the committee.
The indictment also said that Trump campaign officials dispatched Mr. Stone to make contact with WikiLeaks during the summer of 2016, when the website was releasing a trove of damaging information about Hillary Clinton that had been stolen by Russian intelligence operatives.
Mr. Mueller has not accused Mr. Stone of playing a role in the hacking, and Mr. Trump and his allies have pointed out that the indictment does not make a case that the Trump campaign engaged in a conspiracy with Russia to disrupt the election.
Prosecutors from the United States attorney’s office in Washington will try the case in tandem with Mr. Mueller’s team, Jeannie Rhee, one of the special counsel prosecutors, said during Tuesday’s hearing. The move suggested that Mr. Mueller might be eyeing an eventual shift of the case to the United States attorney’s office as the Russia investigation winds down. On Monday, Matthew G. Whitaker, the acting attorney general, told reporters that he believed it was close to its conclusion.
Mr. Stone, known for outlandish outfits, wore a prim suit with a dark blue, knitted tie, and his refusal to comment after his hearing Tuesday was a reversal of his stance in recent days. On Friday, hours after the F.B.I. conducted a raid on his Florida home, he stood on the steps of a courthouse in Fort Lauderdale and declared he would be “completely vindicated.”
“There is no circumstance whatsoever under which I will bear false witness against the president, nor will I make up lies to ease the pressure on myself,” Mr. Stone said then, before flashing twin V-for-victory hand signs made famous by his political hero, former President Richard M. Nixon.
Mr. Stone embarked on a media blitz afterward, giving numerous interviews over the weekend about his case and accusing Mr. Mueller’s investigators of hounding him and his associates.
He said that the messages cited in the indictment that he exchanged with Randy Credico, a longtime New York radio personality who was also called to testify before the House Intelligence Committee, were made in jest and taken “out of context."
“I never told Mr. Credico to lie,” he said on Sunday during an interview on ABC’s “This Week.”
As he exited the courthouse on Tuesday, Mr. Stone looked at reporters and pointed toward the exit, appearing to signal them to an area outside where he could talk. But the mayhem that greeted him outside — dozens of cameramen and protesters holding signs — quickly crowded him into the back seat of a sport-utility vehicle, which drove him away from the courthouse. Mr. Stone never commented.B:
